Just a few words from a cleaner (Namely, me. I'm not a cleaner here, FYI.)

Clean the Jap text. Zoom in, delete those kanji, zoom in even more and clean the dust. Do some fine tuning (e.g. fooling around with the colour curves a little - not too much. Moderation is your best friend.)

And for two paged spreads(Perhaps you should include these in the cleaning test...)

(Before I start, I'm using your unblessed tutorial's example... No cleans from me - Too much exams to spend an hour on it.)

The clone tool might be your best friend. (Not for me - I redraw totally. [I used to be a spriter (AKA Those people drawing with small small size and images.

This sort of stuff. I don't do it anymore - too eye straining.) so that past experience might have helped.])

Using the clone tool, select the portion that isn't empty. Use your eye power (>.> Quoting my maths teacher here.) and slowly 'smooth' the 'cursor-thingy' to the other end. Do this for the entire image, and for fine gritty details, either redraw using the PENCIL or C+R+P (Copy + Rotate + Paste). Be sure to clean the CRP'-ed area. Sometimes parts just don't agree.

Drawing a few lines on another layer to help align might help you.

As you can see from the unblessed tutorial, the person 'blacked' some areas - that is, he/she drew through several black areas that had some dirt black. Although I don't agree with some 'blacks', it's generally a good example of what to do.

Then when everything is done, level using the guidelines given. No matter how tempting it might be to use the levels to get rid of the dirt - AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. It will ruin the consistency of the whole scanlation. A very dark cleaned image clashes with the others. When levelled, zoom in again, and clean out the escaped dust. I find that 'selection by colour in region tool thingy' (GIMP = Fuzzy selection tool. No idea in PS CS3. PS CS3-illiterate. I use GIMP mostly.) with a threshold setting of 10, selection by composite, with anti alias and feather edge off works well for me generally - fine tune and play with the settings to suit the needs of the certain image.

P.S. Save halfdone and done in PSD/XCF/(INSERT LAYER SUPPORTING FORMAT) BEFORE saving it again as JPG.

Why? JPG saves by 'encoding' the image with a lossy algorithm. Colours will BE off when saved as JPG. When saving it as JPG to submit, try setting quality to 100%. This will reduce colour loss, at the slight expense of size.

I made the mistake of mass clicking after a day of cleaning and saved the last image as JPG without any lossless image format backup. Had to redo the entire last image later.

That's all my sleep deprived brain can think off. Night.
