it's not so much translations that's holding up OD...

BUT that's quite besides the point! Let's get ourselves a stack of TL scripts for OD!

Re: translator

Post by ahhao1993 on Mon Aug 10, 2009 7:55 pm

ok tired of waiting after 1min. decided to just paste everything here.( didn't trans everything as I did not understand some things.

Mikoto Shinozaki
With no strengths, he spents each day without an aim. But, one day, he suddenly wanted to change his life. At the same time, the girl who he likes a lot, Yuki, introduces him to ' Bicycle'. He then focuses intently on training and is now going to participate in his first race after joining the bicycle club. But... after only half the journey, his legs have signs of exhaustion and pain, coupled with the bad weather and heavy rain which many cyclists are scared of, causes him to * don't understand the rest'

Yuki fukazawa
Because of his bother's promise to give her money for every one member she gets to join the club, hence she decided to get Shinozaki to join the club. Although he looks like guy who doesn't deserve much attention '' dan jiu shi you dian zai yi (don't understand') '' However, she just feels that he ' Has' a certain type of ability. Forget it, that should be just her sixth sense. Yuki's '' Yin yan ( don't know what that means'' is wrong this time ?

Takeshi

Shinozaki's classmate, and is also at the same time his best competitor, has no interest in girls, but is very interesting . With extreme confidence in his uphill skills, he has none in his downskill skills. As his aim is to be the ' World Number 1' hence he belives that he canot lose in this little race in this eastern town. Because he loves his black cycling attire, hence he is nicknamed '' Kurosuke''

Yosuke
Captain of the cycling team, he is very stubborn and crude/ aggressive. Sometimes he might just commit some weird actions without reasons, people around him wonder what might happen if his life doesn't contain bicycles. But what is sure is that in his high school, he is definitely a genius in cycling. For now, there is no reason why he is so determined to get the victory in this race.

Terao
Vice captain of the team, and yousuke's childhood playmate, is a kind heartened man who constantly takes hardship. One can say that he is the team's... No, should be this manga's representation of kindness. Happy to have Shinozaki to join the team, he starts to plan his training schedules , and puts in his effort to train him up to be a good partner in to race, but just a little kind. Hoping that Shinozaki can have his aim as finishing the entire race as he believes that it is the only way for him to experience the happines and cruelty of the race.

Hyodo
Japan's Cycling World No.1
Loves money, women and himself. Until last year, he is still a cyclist in Switerland, until he experienced for imself the standard of ' World-Class ' Cycling After hardening his body and strengthing his abilites, he returned to Japan. Everyone including himself acknowledged that he had the highest chance of attaining victory at the race. He is also now the leader of the pack. For unknown reasons, he does not mention the happenings during his stay in Switerland.

Takanobu Terao
No matter when, his mood is also very HIG, always wearing a weird T-shirt. He loves flaunting his knowledge of bicycles to girls who does not know anything about it, is a father who is a little pervertic.

Re: translator

Post by Dark-san on Mon Aug 10, 2009 9:59 pm

Firstly ah hao, just a few advices from me before you start out in translating. Number one rule of scanlation for being translator, it is your job to make sense in what you translating. Because noone else in the group besides the translator would have any idea on what that mandarin character means.

Number two rule is that if you are not sure about what you are translating, it is your job to find it out. Get a good dictionary and flip through them.

Okay here are a few mistakes that I found when I looked through the one that you had done,

1) Shinozaki Mikoto

- Please include the details next to the name, '(First year) Type: Short distance sprinter'.
- Please don't state 'Bicycle'. Bicycle is the two-wheeled tool that you use in cycling. It is the sport, cycling, that Yuki introduced to Mikoto.
- Again, a recap from what I said earlier. Please don't say I don't know or I don't understand. >.>; For the last part, it means 'As he is slowing down, he was abandoned by both Fukuzawa and Terao at the second checkpoint.'

2) Yukie Fukazawa

- Please include the details next to the name, '(First year) Always seeking guys companionship'.
- Again, please find out. Leave no stones unturned. The last gibberish part means 'Although he is just an ordinary guy, she can’t help wondering that he looks like one that got the talents. It’s all right, it could just be her feminine instincts. Yuki Fukuzawa had not have experience any feminine instincts prior to this, could she really be spot on?'

3) Takeshi Yamato

- Please include the details next to the name, '(First year) Type: Climber'.
- A couple of mistakes here. Firstly, Mikoto considers him a rival for one not a strong competitor.
- It doesn't mean he has no confidence in his downslope skills. Just that he doesn't seems interested in tackling them.
- Hmm there is no such thing call a little eastern town. '东洋' means Japan in olden days. I think I made a little mistake here in my translation as well. >.<;

4) Yosuke Fukazawa

- Please include the details next to the name, '(Third year) Type: Downhill Specialist '.
- The perfect one so far. Do note that please don't state bicycles, you should say something like 'If it isn't for cycling, they have no idea on how his life will turn out to be.' Somewhere along this line, it will do.

5) Koichi Terao

- Please include the details next to the name, '(Third year) Type: All-rounder'
- I won't called Terao being kind. It is just that the manga painted him as a good guy in order to balance out Yosuke Fukazawa's image of the villain in the team. So instead I would preferred the phrase, 'embodiment of conscience.' Otherwise, it is all good.

6) Naoto Hyoudou

- Please include the details next to the name, 'Type: Speedman'
- Hyoudou didn't go to Switzerland, he went to Holland. Holland as in the Netherlands. In the raw, it would be written as '荷兰' not '瑞士'. ._.

7) Takanobu Terao

- Please include the details next to the name, '41 years old The owner of the cycling shop, ‘Terao’'
- Looks all right. Except that you might want to replace the 'HIG' to something else. I would used the word 'Livid' as in lively.

And also in the Picture 1 test from earlier, there is one part that you have no idea on. If I would to translate it. It would mean,

'Don't tell me that my true wish... is to suppress my own strength... to linger on in this race with a steadily worsening condition?'

Although Justam has reword it to,

'Do I really want to prevent myself from trying my best so I can finish the race?'

That probably sounded better. ^.^;

Anyway those are the few mistakes that I've spotted. Well the verdict is that...

You passed! Congratulations... but you still have lots to work on. >.<;

I've attached your first assignment in this link

Do note that it contains the following,

1) The raws for the chapter that you are to work on.
2) Translation guide on the various formats that you can use for your translations.
3) A proofreading guide that you can read to improve the Singlish I see from a few of your paragraphs. Also get rid of the 'lors' and 'liao', the Americans or the English will not understand Singaporean slangs.

After you are done, please give an email to Mathi at mathi36@gmx.ch. For any other doubts, you have feel free to private message me and Kouri-chan. If we are available, we will reply back. ^.^; Or alternatively you can post here and I see to those questions too. If you are too impatient and want to talk to somebody online. Come onto IRC.

Re: translator

btw. i dun understand this

When you set out the script, make sure to correctly label each bubble and box in the manga. If theres 5 bubbles, 2 text and 4 boxes on a page, make sure you make that exact many on your script. Be sure not the mix some of the translations into one. Here's an example of how it should be set out:

Page 95
---
1: Right!
2: All you need to do is to jump to this area.
Box1: Jump from over there to here,
3: Now...I will draw the line for you.
T1: What...? What does he mean...
T2: I thought it was suppose to be a battle...
Small text between the tope 2 frames: 1Ken = 1.8m

Like this, you will name everying in chronological order, starting from right to left, top to bottom. You won't be needing to name the bubbles (putting 1, 2, 3 will do). T stands for text, and Box are boxes. This method is much easier and so forth, so I hope you can follow this layout.

can sum1 do it and show me or a sample or sth? X.X
or i just cont like how i do in the 1st pic ? ? O.O

Re: translator

Post by Dark-san on Tue Aug 11, 2009 12:33 am

It is a translation format.

Bubble as in speech bubbles.
Boxes as in Commentators or Narrator's speech.
Text as in paragraphs of words that are either in bubbles or boxes.
Sfx is a shorten word for Sound Effects.

Let me show you an example of a page, where you have them altogether.

From that page, you see a variety. An example of a box would be like those in Panel 1. A bubble would be like those in Panel 2. Text is in Panel 4. And Sfx is at the background of Panel 1.

So if I would to translate this page, the format would be as follows,

Page 3
box1- Although it was a bit unexpected, Number 9 Aizawa Kakeru took a beautiful mid-range shot towards the goal!
box2- That powerful right legged shot outside the penalty box was a bit unexpected given his slender body proportion! It looks like the opposition can no longer be negligent about that.
SFX: Waa Waa
bbl1-
bbl2- He took a mid- range shot …
bbl3- Don’t tell me that this fellow has projectiles with him!
bbl4- Although it is still incomparable to Suguru’s rocket shot, it is still not that bad.
text1- If that is the case, he could get the ‘stage’ set up.
box3- This is FC’s chance.
box4- Who would Araki pass the ball to?

Legends
bbl- Bubble
box- Box
test- Text
SFX- Sfx

Of course, this is only one type of translation format. You can try your own but it is preferred that you don't deviate too far from this.

'//' or '/'s could denote as the following,

- Panel breaks

To distinguish from one panel to the other.

- Font alignments

For instances, there are times when the bubble uses two types of fonts in it. So in order not to confuse the typesetter, the translator puts these dividers in.

o.o I never noticed that the diff font thing had to be indicated. I'd imagine the Chinese translations and the Jap raw would have discrepancies? Anyway, something to think about when I do get back in action.
